Prince Edward Island P.E.I, lying in the Gulf of St. Lawrence is Canada’s smallest province in both area and population. Micmac Indians lived there before the arrival of Europeans in 1534 when Jacques Cartier described it as “the most beautiful stretch of land imaginable.” Charlottetown, the capital, was the site of the 1864 conference that set Canadian Confederation in motion. However “The Island” did not join the Dominion of Canada until 1873.
